Yarn Bases

In keeping with the theme that inspired Chrysalis Yarns, our yarn bases are named to honor influential women within the fields of environmentalism, botany, ornithology, and entomology.

Anna Comstock Kid Silk

Comstock Kid Silk is currently the only laceweight base we offer. It's 100% plastics free, non-superwash. Use this yarn held together with another weight to give strength to your finished objects as a substitute for nylon, or to create additional texture. Likewise, it's a beautiful yarn on its own.

Maria Sibylla Merian Fingering

Caroline Dormon Single DK

Caroline Dormon never married, which made her a perfect fit for naming our Dormon Single Ply DK yarn. This yarn is a dream to work with as its blend of alpaca, merino, and silk fibers glide over your needles and drape beautifully as garments. It is 100% natural protein fibers with no chemical treatment or plastics. There is a bit of fuzz which is to be expected from alpaca.

Florence Merriam Bailey DK

Bailey is the DK equivalent of Patch Sock. Another luscious merino/cashmere/nylon blend, this slightly heavier weight yarn would make excellent garments, accessories, or even luxurious baby knits. Superwash was designed with machine washing in mind, but we still highly recommend hand washing your finished objects.

(As a mother, I would understand the impulse to machine wash baby knits. If machine-washed, please use detergent designed for hand knit wools, on the delicate cycle in cold water, inside a mesh bag. Lay Flat to dry)

Margaret Fountaine Worsted

Fountaine Worsted, like Merian 4ply, is a super-soft powerhouse of merino wool that is free of chemical treatment prior to dyeing. Its springy twist and natural bloom make it especially great for outdoor-wear accessories and garments. Untreated wool carries natural antimicrobial and antibacterial properties and its hydrophobic fibers make it excellent and absorbing and releasing sweat from skin, as well as resisting germs for minimal washing requirements.
